Tom Robinson is falsely accused of raping a white woman and has to appear in court. His testimony makes him seem like a caring and honest man. According to him, he was walking past the Ewell's house when Mayella asked him if he could help her fix the family's chiffarobe. Tom, feeling bad for her and wanting to help out, willingly goes inside the house to help. Mayella is overcome with emotion and she tries to kiss Tom. Bob Ewell, Mayella's father, sees this and assumes the worst. She panics and lies, saying that Tom raped her. Tom repeats this story in court and tells what really happened. He says that he ran away because he knew he would be found guilty. In the end, Tom is found "guilty" anyway and is convicted.
The theme that is relevant to this part of the story is "Racial Prejudice." Tom is obviously innocent, yet he is being charged for a crime that he did not commit. The city of Maycomb can't comprehend that a black man can actually be the victim in a case like this. Blind by their prejudice, the citizens of the town turn against a humble and hardworking man, later resulting in his death.
This song represents how Tom probably feels towards Mayella. He tried to be a nice guy and help her, and she ruined his life. In other words, she is heartless.
Tom ends up getting killed. He tried to escape from prison and was shot several times. Unfortunately, the wounds turn out to be fatal. This tragedy shows "racial prejudice" because of the injustice of the court case due to Tom's race. The below image represents how the rest of the town treated Tom because of his skin color.
After Tom's death, Mr. Underwood reacted in a large way. He writes a long editorial about how Tom's death was pointless and that it was the death of an innocent man. He thought that the outcome of the trial was ridiculous and that Tom was obviously innocent. This shows "moral courage" because Mr. Underwood did something as a tribute to Tom's passing.
Tom is one of the two "mockingbirds" in the story. In my opinion, he is also the most significant one. He is killed when he only did good to others, and he did no harm. His death is a tragedy because it is only a loss and no gain. This makes him the prime example of a "mockingbird". This shows "racial prejudice" yet again because he basically died because of his skin color.
