Mayella Ewell is a member of one of the poorest families in Maycomb. She is treated badly by her family, especially her dad Bob, and never seems to get any attention. One day, she sees Tom Robinson walking down the street and asks him to fix a chiffarobe for her. After he agrees and comes into her house, Mayella has the sudden desire to kiss Tom. She wants to get attention from someone. Unfortunately, her dad sees the entire thing. Long story short, Mayella accuses Tom of rape to avoid the wrath of her father for kissing a black man. During the entire trial, she seems uneasy and pretends she can't remember anything. She believes that Atticus makes fun of her because he calls her "miss" and "mam". Mayella overall is just a pathetic girl who wants some attention for once in her life.
The Ewell family is one of poorest families in the town of Maycomb. The live in a small house near the town dump and near the black households. They are uneducated for the most part, and most of the kids only went to school for a few grades. Most of the family seems to think they are superior to the blacks, even though they are no greater than them. The photo below represents the family's attitude towards the black community (snobbish). Their attitude shows "racial prejudice" because they believe they are better than anyone who is black.
