Jem Finch is the brother of Scout and the son of Atticus. He is grumpy and moody a lot of the time, but he is still a good brother to Scout. During the summer he plays with Scout and their friend, Dill. Jem remembers his mother, unlike his sister, and was greatly affected by her death. The themes that relate to Jem are "Gender Prejudice" and "Striving to reach adulthood." He believes that Scout should stop acting like a boy and act like a lady and he stops wanting her to play with him and Dill. He also struggles because he wants to grow up and he doesn't enjoy being a little kid.
Demons by the band Imagine Dragons represents Jem. He is fighting an inner battle as he is growing up and becoming a man. He becomes moody and pushes his sister away and starts keeping to himself. "Don't get too close, it's dark inside" is the line of the song that stands out to me and makes me think of Jem.
An event that changes Jem is when Mrs. Dubose his dad. He retaliates and cuts the tops off of her Camellia bushes. When both Atticus and Mrs. Dubose find out, he is forced to read to Mrs. Dubose for a month. Mrs. Dubose happens to be a very old and sick women and is a morphine addict. After a while, she passes away. Jem went from not caring about the old women at all, to crying when she dies. The theme that connects to this event is "Striving to reach adulthood". Jem starts to grow up and he becomes more compassionate for others.
This song describes this event because Jem's whole perspective of Mrs. Dubose changes.
Jem reacted greatly to the trial. He believed that the entire trial was unfair. In his mind it was obvious who actually was the guilty person. Jem just couldn't believe that Tom's verdict was "guilty", when he was so obviously not. He got emotional, and even cried, over the injustice of it all. The theme represented is "striving to reach adulthood" because of the fact that Jem is growing up and starting to understand how unfair the world is. The picture below symbolizes how the entire case was unfair and wrong.
